I have actually been a golfer since about the age of 14 or so, when I started playing golf at the weekends with school friends and dads at the local municipal 9-hole course.
However after playing for a long time, life got in the way and I stopped playing regularly, just playing the occasional round in the summer months.
Recently that has all changed, I am now a golfer again!
A new golfer needs new gear
A few months ago I decided that using the same clubs since I was about 18 needed to change. They were getting a little old and rusty (a bit like me!) and technology has moved on so much more, I thought that an upgrade would be good.
American Golf in Preston sorted me out with a beginners set – let’s face it, I was really back to being a beginner after not playing often enough for so long.
My Wilson Ultra XLS Steel golf club set from American golf came with much of the equipment I needed. The set consisted of:
- Driver
- Fairway wood
- Hybrid
- 6 iron
- 7 iron
- 8 iron
- 9 iron
- Pitching wedge
- Sand wedge
- Head covers for metals
- Golf bag with stand
I picked this up for £299, a pretty good price I thought for getting started.
I then added to that, my existing trolley which is a good one (nice and light and folds down quite small), some cheap Dunlop golf shoes, an umbrella and a right handed medium large Slazenger golf glove. Chuck in a few (well you need way more than you think as you will lose quite a few to start with!) balls and some tees and we are ready to go.

So there we have it, ready to get back to playing golf again. I will report back on how it goes!
